The Spirit of Self-control & Discipline Making a decision!!!

2Ti 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control. At my heaviest I weighed 160 kg. By faith in God, my weight dropped gradually over the years, but I stuck at around 105 kg. I wanted to still lose around 20 kg, but struggled due to bad eating habits. Most of the time I over- ate. My weight went up and down all the time. I did not even want to go away on holidays or weekends, because of the fear of picking up the weight I lost during the week. I lived with that fear every time I stepped on the scale; I wanted to be FREE: free to eat what I want in a controlled manner and not pick up weight. I used all sorts of diets, pills, fasting, gym, running. Nothing worked on the long term. 1 Tim 4:8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come. 1 Co 6:12-13 Everything is permissible for me; but not all things are helpful. Everything is lawful for me, but I will not become the slave of anything or be brought under its power. Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, but God will finally end both and bring them to nothing. The body is not intended for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

On 28 June 2012 I was lying in the bathtub and asked God to show me how to lose this extra weight. God spoke to me:' You do not use My Spirit of self-control and discipline I gave you. It’s your responsibility to utilize the Spirit of self-control.' 'How Lord? How do I use Your self-controlling Spirit, God?' God said:’ I gave you self-control and discipline. It’s your decision to use it or not.’ . I decided I would not weigh myself during these 94 days. . I decided I would use this to establish and utilize a spirit of self-control and discipline God gave me. By not weighing myself for 94 days, I learnt to make a small quality decision and stick to it. God did not teach me self control and discipline – He taught me to MAKE A DECISION AND STICK WITH IT.

Steps to take: • Make a quality decision; write it down because you will forget. In making decisions I test myself on what Holy Spirit taught me in the gym. If you decide to do 15 reps you will do it, if you decide beforehand you will do 10 reps bicep training, you will do just 10. I decided one morning I would just drink protein powders for that day and I wrote it down, so by the end of the day that is exactly what I did. • Focus on the goal you want to reach and not on how you feel. • Start small and get small victories, then eventually tackle the big challenges. I decided I would not smoke tomorrow. See your victory, increase the challenge. Get victories and move to bigger ones. • Stay away from temptation. • Don’t try to stop the bad habit; replace it with a good habit. Replace bad food with good food. It takes 21 days to stop a bad habit and learn a good habit. • Decide what to do; don’t decide what not to do. I decide to eat healthy food today; I do not decide to not eat bad foods. • Don’t judge yourself if you fail, you have not totally failed; you have just found another way not to do it. You just try again the next day with smaller goals until you are victorious. • When you fail there is the GRACE OF GOD that catches you. If you fail in your approach, failure is a victory in disguise. Change; learn from that failure and take a revised approach. • Pray for strength. • Thank God all the time for your victory even when you have failed.

How do you stick to your decisions? Most important of all: You can say NO to temptation, addictions, etc., because of Jesus that strengthens you and knows ALL temptations you are going through. He says: You can do all things because I strengthen you. So you can say NO to temptations and addictions. Phi 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning. Jam 1:14 But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions). Jam 4:7 So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you. Act 24:16 Therefore I always exercise and discipline myself to have a clear conscience, void of offense toward God and toward men. Rom 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the Holy Spirit.

My testimony: I wanted to stop smoking. Every day I wrote on a paper: “I have stopped smoking, I will never smoke again.” I stuck it to my wall so I could see it with the date. The next day had barely arrived; I had only stopped for 2 hours, and then I would buy myself cigarettes again. I did this over and over again, failing again and again. Until one day I made a promise to God [quality decision] to never smoke again – that day was 8 September 1993 – and I’ve never smoked again!! Do you want to stay the same? Do you want to be addicted to eating, smoking, drinking or drugs? Make a DECISION and take that first step to change. God can take the second step with you. Deut 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life that you and your descendants may live Holy Spirit, we thank You for total freedom and self-control in Christ.

A teacher said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, he made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” He replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. ”Thomas Edison
