Stand for human rights and solidarity. Attend Pastor E’s bail hearing

When: Wednesday 8 February, from9am*
Where: High Court, Harare (Samora Machel Ave between 2nd and 3rd St)

On Wednesday 1 February, Pastor Evan Mawarire returned to Zimbabwe after several months out of the country. He was arrested upon his arrival at Harare International Airport, and taken to Harare Central. He appeared in court on Friday 3 February, charged with subverting constitutional government and insulting the flag. At this hearing, the Magistrate remanded him to 17 February. Given the nature of the charges, his bail application must be made at the High Court, so he has remained in custody.

On the weekend he was moved from Harare’s Remand Prison (where one would have expected him to be detained, as someone awaiting trial) to Chikurubi Maximum Prison where he is being held as a Category D prisoner (Category D inmates are those convicted of crimes such as murder and armed robbery.

Meanwhile, Mawarire is an accused prisoner, he hasn’t been convicted of anything). His bail hearing at the High Court, currently scheduled for Wednesday 8 February, will ask that he be remanded out of custody pending his next court appearance 17 Feb.

*It is possible the date / time for the bail hearing may change – it has already been moved once. To confirm, check #ThisFlag’sFacebook and Twitter accounts and Kubatana’s Twitter account regularly for updates. If you do want to attend, dress smart/casual and bring your ID
